Judges’ transfer powers reduced, Field Marshal title retained for life; bill to be presented in Senate after consultations with allies.
ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-Nov,8, 2025) Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the 27th Constitutional Amendment limits the executive’s powers over judicial transfers while ensuring the Field Marshal honor remains for life.
Speaking to the media after a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif via video link from Baku, Tarar said various constitutional reforms were discussed, which will now be presented in the Senate. The bill will be sent to a joint committee after its introduction.
Consultations with allies, including PPP, MQM, and other parties, have been completed. Tarar noted that a longstanding promise regarding the Constitutional Court under the Charter of Democracy has now been agreed upon.
The amendment proposes transferring judicial powers to the Judicial Commission, includes legal provisions to resolve delays in KPK Senate elections, and considers increasing advisers to seven. Changes to Article 243 and Article 140A are also proposed to clarify appointments and address ambiguities.
Tarar emphasized that while the Field Marshal rank had been abolished pre-1973 Constitution, the honor will now remain for life. The government will urge coalition partners to support the amendment’s approval.
