Constitution can be amended, says barrister Aqeel

Minister of State for Law says 27th Amendment serves national interest and isn’t being rushed; urges provinces to share federal fiscal burden.

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-Nov,6 , 2025) Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel has said that the Constitution is not a divine scripture that cannot be amended.

Speaking on Geo news program Geo Pakistan, Barrister Aqeel dismissed claims that the 26th Constitutional Amendment was rushed due to someone’s retirement and added that there is no haste in the 27th Amendment either. He said the matter would be thoroughly discussed before finalization.

He emphasized that the 27th Amendment involves national interest issues, adding that the process had been under discussion for quite some time and was not aimed at benefiting or harming any political party.

Barrister Aqeel further said the government has decided to get the 27th Constitutional Amendment passed by both Houses of Parliament by November 14.

He criticized the opposition for issuing political statements without reviewing the amendment, urging them to present their views in the standing committees and on the parliament floor. The government, he said, will also review the stance of the PPP’s Central Executive Committee.

Explaining fiscal concerns, the minister said the Federal government allocates 57% of NFC resources to provinces, while it still bears the burden of defense spending, pensions, social protection, and debt repayments. He stressed the need for shared fiscal responsibility, saying provinces should contribute equally to reducing the federal government’s financial load.
