KP CM vows to oppose 27th Constitutional Amendment, calls it an attack on provincial autonomy

Sohail Afridi reiterates that his party would resist the proposed amendment

ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Nov 5th, 2025) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Wednesday announced that his government would strongly oppose the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment, terming it “a direct assault on provincial autonomy.”

Speaking to reporters at Parliament House, Afridi said he had come to attend the parliamentary party meeting and submit a resolution seeking permission to meet the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). “Since the day I became Chief Minister, I have repeatedly requested for a meeting, but it has not been allowed. I even approached the High Court for facilitation. As Parliament is supreme, I decided to submit a resolution here,” he explained.

The KP CM reiterated that his party would resist the proposed amendment. “The 27th Constitutional Amendment is a robbery on provincial autonomy. We will not tolerate any attack on the powers of the provinces,” he asserted.

Afridi said that PTI would foil every attempt to weaken democracy, emphasizing that the party was the true guardian of both the Constitution and democratic principles.

“The Federal government owes Khyber Pakhtunkhwa more than Rs7.5 billion under the NFC Award, which allocates 19.4 percent share to the province. Under the 18th Amendment, provincial autonomy must remain intact, and provinces should receive their due rights. There can be no compromise on autonomy,” the Chief Minister stressed.

Afridi further said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had sacrificed the most for Pakistan. “Our martyrs laid down their lives for the country; therefore, the province that gave the most sacrifices deserves respect and recognition,” he added.

Meanwhile, PTI has formally rejected the proposed 27th Amendment but expressed willingness to hold discussions with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) over the issue.

According to federal government sources, preparations for the 27th Constitutional Amendment are underway. The proposed changes include amending Article 243 to constitutionally recognize the rank of Field Marshal granted to the Chief of Army Staff. The draft also includes provisions related to the establishment of constitutional courts, delegation of executive magistracy powers to the district level, and the introduction of a uniform curriculum nationwide.

Sources further said the 27th Amendment Bill is expected to be presented and passed in Parliament next week.
