Race to secure approval of 27th Constitutional Amendment has reached a critical point in Pakistan's Parliament, with government's success now largely dependent on numbers game in both National Assembly and Senate
ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Nov 5th, 2025) The race to secure the approval of the 27th Constitutional Amendment has reached a critical point in Pakistan's Parliament, with the government's success now largely dependent on the numbers game in both the National Assembly and the Senate.
According to sources, the government has garnered support from 237 members in the National Assembly for the proposed constitutional amendment, while 224 votes are needed for its passage.
In the lower house, the ruling coalition includes 125 members from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), 74 from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), 22 from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), 5 from the Pakistan Muslim League (PML), and 4 from the Independent Political Parties (IPP). Additionally, one member each from the Zia League, National Party, and Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), as well as 4 independent members, are also backing the government's position.
In contrast, opposition parties in the National Assembly hold 89 seats.
The situation in the Senate is no less critical. The ruling coalition commands 61 seats, while the opposition holds 35. To secure the necessary two-thirds majority in the Senate, which amounts to 64 votes, the government will need the support of at least 3 members from either Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) or the Awami National Party (ANP).
The success of the amendment now depends on delicate negotiations and alliance-building, with the government working to ensure it has enough support in both legislative chambers to push through this significant constitutional change.
