Sohail Afridi elected new chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

PTI’s Sohail Afridi becomes the new KP Chief Minister with 90 assembly votes, succeeding Ali Amin Gandapur; opposition boycotts the session, calling the election unconstitutional.

PESHAWAR: (UrduPoint/UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News-Oct,13, 2025) Sohail Afridi has been elected as the new Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after securing 90 votes in the provincial assembly. The session, presided over by Speaker Babar Saleem Swati, witnessed a boycott from the opposition, which termed the election “unconstitutional,” arguing that Ali Amin Gandapur’s resignation had not yet been accepted.

Addressing the assembly after his election, Afridi expressed gratitude to PTI founder Imran Khan for choosing him despite having no political family background. He stated, “I did not become chief minister through a chit, but through hard work.”

Former CM Ali Amin Gandapur said he stepped down in accordance with party directions and emphasized his government’s achievements, including raising provincial reserves to Rs218 billion.

Afridi, a first-time MPA from Khyber district, has previously served as Special Assistant for Communication and Works and later as Minister for Higher education.
