ECP says elections will be conducted in last week of December, 2025, under the 2022 Local Government Act
ISLAMABAD: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-Oct 8th, 2025) The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued its reserved verdict on petitions regarding delays in holding local government elections in Punjab.
The ECP said that the elections would be conducted in the last week of December under the 2022 Local Government Act. The commission has also directed that the delimitation process in Punjab begin from Thursday (tomorrow).
The decision was announced by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja along with members Nisar Darani, Shah Muhammad Jatoi, and Babar Hasan Bharwana.
During the hearing, the ECP was informed that Punjab’s local government law has been amended five times, with a sixth amendment currently underway. However, elections can still be held under the 2022 Local Government Act.
Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja remarked that the delay in Punjab’s local elections has become a matter of embarrassment. He noted that while elections have already been conducted in the other three provinces and in cantonment boards, Punjab’s local polls have been repeatedly delayed, and the verdict on this matter would be issued today.
Earlier, the Lahore High Court, on a petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami, had summoned the Advocate General and Chief Secretary Punjab over the failure to hold local government elections in the province.
