During the ICC Women’s World Cup match between Pakistan and Bangladesh, former cricketer and commentator Sana Mir introduced Pakistani player Tanalya Parvez as hailing from Azad Kashmir — a remark that drew sharp reactions in India.
Mir’s reference to Azad Kashmir during live commentary triggered criticism and propaganda campaigns against her on Indian social media platforms.
Responding to the backlash, Sana Mir issued a statement on social media, expressing regret that the matter had been exaggerated to such an extent that she was compelled to clarify it publicly. “As commentators, part of our job is to share the background of players, including where they come from. I mentioned players from two other regions as well. It is unfortunate that this has been blown out of proportion,” she said.

She urged critics not to politicize sports, adding that athletes and commentators should not be subjected to unnecessary pressure. “My purpose was only to highlight the challenges and remarkable journeys of our players. I harbor no malice, nor was my intention to hurt anyone’s sentiments,” Mir emphasized.
