Clifton Cantonment Board identifies 125 dangerous buildings after Karachi's Lyari tragedy

Relevant authorities warn that structures can pose severe risks during heavy rains and storms

KARACHI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 9th, 2025) In response to the recent deadly building collapse in Lyari, the Clifton Cantonment Board on Wednesday initiated a comprehensive survey of dilapidated buildings across its jurisdiction.

The move comes as part of precautionary measures ahead of the monsoon season.

In the first phase of the survey, the board identified 125 buildings deemed structurally dangerous and a potential threat to life and property.

According to board officials, 51 unsafe buildings have been reported in Delhi Colony, 16 in Madni Abad, 7 in Lower Gizri, 5 in Chaudhry Khaliq-uz-Zaman Colony, and 14 in Punjab Colony. Additionally, 27 buildings in Pak Jamhoria Colony and 5 in Bakhshan Village were also found to be hazardous.

The relevant authorities warned that the structures could pose severe risks during heavy rains and storms. The property owners and residents of the listed buildings have been issued immediate evacuation notices to prevent any loss of life or injury.

“The safety of citizens is our top priority. We have directed that these buildings be vacated without delay,” a CBC spokesperson stated.

The development follows the tragic collapse of a five-storey residential building in Lyari's Baghdadi area last week, which claimed 27 lives.

The incident prompted a city-wide reassessment of aging and unsafe buildings.

The officials say the survey would continue in other areas, with further action to follow based on structural assessments.

The CBC urged the public to cooperate with the authorities and report any visibly unsafe structures in their vicinity.
