Liverpool FC announces financial support for Diogo Jota's family after tragic death

ZAMORA: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 7th, 2025) Liverpool Football Club has announced financial support for the family of Portuguese star forward Diogo Jota following his death in a car accident.

Jota lost his life in a fatal accident in the Zamora region of Spain along with his younger brother André Silva. Both brothers died at the scene.

According to reports, Jota had recently undergone lung surgery, and doctors had advised him to avoid flying, which is why he had been unable to return to England.

Diogo Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers and played 182 matches during his five-year stint with the club.

He was also a key member of Liverpool’s 2024-25 Premier League-winning squad. His outstanding performances had made him extremely popular among fans.

Following Jota’s untimely death, Liverpool FC has announced full financial assistance to his family. According to the club, Jota’s contract ran until 2027, and his weekly salary was £140,000 (approximately PKR 51.6 million).

Based on that, the total amount the club will be providing to his family comes to £14.56 million — equivalent to over PKR 5.37 billion.

In tribute to Jota, Liverpool FC has announced the permanent retirement of his shirt number 20.

In a joint statement, club executives Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes said:

“Diogo Jota was not only a great footballer but also a remarkable human being whose absence can never be filled. He will live forever in our hearts.”
