Several people have been injured in building collapse which sparked panic in neighborhood while nearby buildings are also feared to have sustained damage
KARACHI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-July 4th, 2025) A five-storey residential building collapsed near Al-Naweed Hotel in the Baghdadi area of Lyari, leaving at least seven people dead and several others feared trapped under the rubble, officials said on Thursday.
The sudden collapse sparked panic in the neighborhood, while nearby buildings are also feared to have sustained damage.
Rescue authorities confirmed that the building had completely collapsed, and emergency operations were launched immediately upon receiving the report. So far, seven bodies have been recovered from the debris, while several injured people have been pulled out — two of whom are reported to be in critical condition.
At least six families were residing in the collapsed building. Rescue efforts are facing severe challenges due to narrow streets and blocked access, making it difficult to bring in heavy machinery. Local residents have also joined the rescue operation on a self-help basis to assist in removing the debris.
A two-storey adjoining building has been evacuated, while other neighboring structures are also considered at risk of collapse.
Meanwhile, a 40-year-old woman brought to the Trauma Center at Civil Hospital Karachi was found to have sustained multiple fractures and injuries.
Police, Rangers, and rescue teams have reached the site, and Deputy Commissioner South, Javed Nabi Khoso, is also present at the scene. According to the Civil Hospital administration, six injured individuals have been shifted to the hospital so far.
Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori expressed deep sorrow and concern over the incident and directed rescue agencies to carry out swift, coordinated, and effective relief operations.
He instructed that all available resources be utilized to safely recover those trapped and provide immediate medical assistance to the injured. The governor warned that any negligence or carelessness would be intolerable.
Separately, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah also took immediate notice of the incident and termed it deeply tragic. He directed relevant authorities to submit an urgent report and instructed rescue teams to take all possible measures to evacuate the victims from the rubble. The chief minister also ordered the provision of immediate medical aid to the injured.
