SWAT: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 28th, 2025) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah visited Swat to assess the ongoing rescue operations following the tragic Swat River incident near the Mingora Bypass, where dozens of tourists were swept away by a sudden flash flood.
During his visit, the Chief Secretary announced financial compensation of Rs. 1.5 million for the families of each deceased victim. He revealed that out of the 85 individuals who were trapped during the flood, 58 were successfully rescued.
In response to apparent negligence in managing the situation, Shahab Ali Shah ordered the immediate suspension of local administrative officers and the district rescue officer. He emphasized that an inquiry committee has been formed to thoroughly investigate the incident, and those responsible for negligence will face strict disciplinary action.
“The delay in helicopter deployment was due to poor weather and time constraints,” he explained, addressing concerns over rescue response delays.
He further announced a complete ban on all forms of excavation activities in the Swat River to prevent future disasters. He also pledged strong action against illegal encroachments along the riverbanks.
The chief secretary noted that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) have been issued for the tourists to ensure their safety in the region. So far, 11 bodies have been recovered, and search and recovery operations are ongoing.
Shahab Ali Shah expressed grief over the loss of lives and affirmed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government's support for the bereaved families, and vowed to improve safety measures for tourists and residents alike.
