Former Pakistan Captain says sculptor deserves credit for effort and those involved should be given full marks for their participation in initiative
KARACHI: (UrduPoint/Pakistan Point News-June 12nd, 2025) Former Pakistan cricket team captain and legendary swing bowler Wasim Akram, also known as the “Sultan of Swing,” has finally spoken out about the statue made in his honor.
Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Akram shared an image of his statue alongside a statue of a cheetah and humorously wrote, “My statue is definitely better than this cheetah.”
Commenting on the controversy surrounding the statue installed at Hyderabad’s Niaz Stadium, he said, “There’s been a lot of talk about the statue. In my view, the idea is more important.”
Wasim Akram emphasized that the sculptor deserves credit for the effort and those involved should be given full marks for their participation in the initiative.
It may be mentioned that the statue was recently installed at Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad but failed to impress cricket fans. Following its unveiling, the photos of the statue went viral on the social media, where fans harshly criticized its lack of resemblance to the cricket legend.
The statue portrays Wasim Akram in his bowling action wearing the Pakistani jersey from the 1999 ICC World Cup.
However, the fans complained that the face of the statue looks nothing like Akram and instead resembles a Hollywood action hero.
