Almost 50 People Freed From Taliban Prisons In Afghanistan - Reports

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 11th June, 2019) Afghan security forces have freed at least 47 people, including civilians, who were held captive by the Taliban radical movement in northeastern Afghanistan, the Afghan Defense Ministry and local media said on Tuesday.

At least 34 people, including 17 civilians, were released from a Taliban detention facility in the northeastern Baghlan province during an operation in the early hours of Tuesday, the TOLOnews broadcaster reported, citing local authorities.

Another 13 people were liberated during a raid in the neighboring Kunduz province, the Afghan Defense Ministry said.

"Last night in a special operation of Commando forces, 13 ANDSF [Afghan National Defense and Security Forces] heroes and Afghan civilians were freed from Taliban's prison from Kunduz province," the ministry tweeted.

The Taliban remains one of the key opponents of US-backed Kabul in the lengthy civil conflict in the country. The security forces carry out regular airstrikes and anti-terrorist operations against the insurgents, killing and capturing Taliban members, destroying their hideouts and liberating captives.
