Mufti Popalzai rejects lunar calendar, says it shouldn’t apply to Ramzan, Eid

He said that Fawad Chaudhry only wants to remain active in media rather being serious about Islamic calendar.

Islamabad (Pakistan Point News – 27th May, 2019) After Fawad Chaudhry launched Pakistan's first official moon-sighting website and lunar calendar on Sunday, Mufti Popalzai has come out against it.

Renowned religious scholar and head of the unofficial Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Qasim Ali Khan Mosque, Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai has said that he has no objection to the lunar calendar but it should not be applied for observing Ramzan and Eid-ul-Fitr.

"I have not been consulted by anyone regarding Islamic calendar, but I must say that Ramzan and Eid-ul-Fitr must be observed after moon-sighting as per Sharia," he said.

Welcoming the lunar calendar, he said that it should be placed in government offices, public places and houses to know about Islamic months and acknowledge their importance in everyday life.

He said that Fawad Chaudhry only wants to remain active in media rather being serious about Islamic calendar.

Mufti Popalzai added that the local unofficial Ruet-Hilal Committee would hold its meeting on 29th Ramzan, June 4, at Peshawar’s Qasim Ali Khan Mosque and it would announce Eid only after receiving solid witnesses about moon-sighting.

Fawad Chaudhry has finally come up with a five-year lunar calendar to end the moon sighting controversies once and for all.

The Lunar Calendar prepared with the help of experts includes the important dates from 2019 till 2024.

According to this lunar calendar, Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated on June 5 while Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated on August 12 this year.

Meanwhile, a meeting of Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee would be held in Karachi on Tuesday, June 4, for sighting the crescent of Shawwal-ul-Mukarram 1440 AH.

Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Mufti Munib-ur-Rehman will chair the meeting of Zonal Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, Sindh at Pakistan Meteorological Department building, Main University Road, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Karachi.

He will announce the decision of crescent sighting or otherwise subsequently on the basis of information received.
