WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th May, 2019) The United States plans to expand its cooperation with India across several sectors including defense, energy and space, the US Department of State spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said in a statement on Friday.

"We look forward to working with the newly elected government on a range of important issues, including expanding economic and energy ties, enhancing defense and security cooperation, countering the threat of terrorism, and enhanced collaboration in space," Ortagus said.

The statement added that the strategic relationship between the United States and India is founded on shared values and a commitment to a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

The State Department announced in March after the US-India Strategic Security Dialogue that New Delhi and Washington will ramp up civil nuclear cooperation by building six American nuclear power plants in India.

Ortagus also congratulated Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his National Democratic Alliance on their decisive election victory and applauded the high voter turnout.

On Thursday, the Indian Election Commission said, citing preliminary results of the vote, the NDA coalition led by Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had surpassed the 272-mandate threshold needed to win the general elections.

The results thus far show that BJP is set to win about 300 of parliament's 542 seats. India's main opposition National Congress party is expected to win 51 seats.
