Over Half Of UK Citizens Believe Labour Government Would Try To Cancel Brexit - Poll

Over half of UK citizens believe that a possible Labour government under Jeremy Corbyn would attempt to reverse the country's withdrawal from the European Union, while just less than a third expect it to proceed with Brexit, a fresh poll showed on Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 20th May, 2019) Over half of UK citizens believe that a possible Labour government under Jeremy Corbyn would attempt to reverse the country's withdrawal from the European Union, while just less than a third expect it to proceed with Brexit, a fresh poll showed on Monday.

"Half (53%) of the British public believe a Labour government under Jeremy Corbyn would try to keep Britain in the EU and three in ten (30%) think a Labour government would try to take Britain out of the EU," research company Ipsos MORI said.

At the same time, 27 percent of respondents thought the incumbent Conservative government led by Theresa May was trying to keep the United Kingdom in the European Union, while 60 percent believed the opposite.

The poll was conducted by phone among 1,072 UK adults nationwide from May 10-14. The margin of error does not exceed 4 percentage points, with a 90 percent probability.

The United Kingdom was initially supposed to leave the European Union on March 29. A withdrawal deal was reached weeks before the date, but UK lawmakers have refused to pass it, with fears of a re-established hard border on the island of Ireland being one of the main points of concern. The Brexit deadline was subsequently moved to October 31, with the United Kingdom now required to participate in the European Parliament elections if the deal is not passed by May 23.

In late March, May promised to resign before the next phase of the Brexit talks, albeit without providing a specific date for her departure. On Thursday, Sir Graham Brady, the chair of the 1922 Committee, the Conservative Party group in the UK House of Commons that oversees the party's leadership, said May would cement a time line for her resignation after a final attempt to pass her Brexit plan through the parliament.
