Kiev Wants Egypt to Explain Detention of Vessel With 17 Ukrainians - Foreign Ministry

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that it wanted Egypt to provide explanations regarding the detention of the Sea Shark tanker with 17 Ukrainian citizens on board and would summon the Egyptian ambassador on Tuesday

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 19th May, 2019) The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that it wanted Egypt to provide explanations regarding the detention of the Sea Shark tanker with 17 Ukrainian citizens on board and would summon the Egyptian ambassador on Tuesday.

According to the Ukrainian charity fund Assol, the Sea Shark tanker with 17 Ukrainian citizens on board was detained by the Egyptian Navy. The vessel's crew also includes 2 residents of Crimea, 11 citizens of India, the Philippines and Sri Lanka as well as a citizen of Azerbaijan. The fund said that the vessel had been detained over unintentional intrusion in the territorial waters of Egypt.

"The Ukrainian Embassy submitted a note to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry with a demand to explain the situation as well as provide consular employees with an access to the vessel," deputy head of the Consular Department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Vasyl Kirillich said, as quoted by the UNIAN news agency.

He added that the Ukrainian Embassy in Egypt had been tasked to take urgent measures aimed at solving the situation.

According to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's Director of Department of Consular Service Serhiy Pogoreltsev, the ministry will summon the Egyptian ambassador on Tuesday.
