Russian Foreign Ministry Discussed Counterterror Cooperation With Sri Lankan Ambassador

Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Oleg Syromolotov held a meeting with Ambassador Dayan Jayatilleka of Sri Lanka, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th May, 2019) Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Oleg Syromolotov held a meeting with Ambassador Dayan Jayatilleka of Sri Lanka, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Monday.

"During the meeting, they discussed the issues of international cooperation in combating terrorism as well as the prospects of strengthening the bilateral collaboration in this sphere," the statement reads.

On April 21, during Easter Sunday, Sri Lanka was hit by a series of eight nationwide deadly bombings killing over 300 and injuring many more. The Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia) has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks. In a massive counter-terrorist operation - which included curfew and ban on major social networks and instant messaging apps - police claimed it had detained or killed all suspected perpetrators.

According to Sri Lankan authorities, there are some 130-140 active IS members currently present in the island state.
