Deputy Head Of Venezuelan Opposition-Led Legislature Detained - Constituent Assembly

CARACAS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 09th May, 2019) Edgar Zambrano, the deputy speaker of the Venezuelan opposition-controlled National Assembly, has been detained in the wake of the failed coup in the country, Diosdado Cabello, the head of the government-led National Constituent Assembly has said.

"I am informing you that several minutes ago, one of the leaders of the government overturn of April 30 ... Edgar Zambrano ... was detained," Cabello said live on a state-run tv channel on Wednesday.

Moreover, there is a post on the opposition politician's Twitter account saying that his car had been surrounded by officers of the Venezuelan intelligence service SEBIN.

Notably, Venezuelan authorities have been refusing to recognize the legitimacy of the National Assembly since 2016.

The fresh coup attempt happened in Venezuela as Juan Guaido, the National Assembly speaker, called on military personnel to break ranks and overthrow the government of President Nicolas Maduro. However, the military remained loyal to the president and the Venezuelan legitimate government.

The South American country has been suffering from unrest since January when Guaido, supported by the United States, proclaimed himself the interim president in a bid to dispute Maduro's re-election in the last year vote.
