UK Cabinet Minister Confirms UK to Hold European Elections on May 23 - Reports

UK Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington on Tuesday confirmed that the United Kingdom would be unable to ratify the Brexit deal in the next two weeks and would organize the European Parliament elections on May 23

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th May, 2019) UK Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington on Tuesday confirmed that the United Kingdom would be unable to ratify the Brexit deal in the next two weeks and would organize the European Parliament elections on May 23.

According to Sky news, the minister stressed that the government had been hoping there would be no need to hold the elections.

"We very much hoped that we would be able to get our exit sorted and have the treaty concluded so that those elections did not have to take place. But legally, they do have to take place - unless our withdrawal has been given legal effect - so those will now go ahead," the minister said, as quoted by the broadcaster.

Lidington added that the government would work hard to ensure that "the delay after that is as short as possible."
