The New York Times Apologizes For Anti-Semitic Cartoon About Netanyahu, Trump

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 28th April, 2019) The New York Times newspaper has apologized for an anti-Semitic cartoon about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump, published in Monday's international edition.

The cartoon showed the Israeli prime minister as a guide dog with the Star of David on its collar and the US president as a blind man in traditional Jewish clothes, who is guided by the "dog."

"The image was offensive, and it was an error of judgment to publish it. It was provided by The New York Times news Service and Syndicate, which has since deleted it," the editor's note posted on the Twitter page said, adding that the cartoon included "anti-Semitic tropes."

The American Jewish Committee (AJC) has refused to accept the apologies, describing it as "naked anti-Semitism."

"Apology not accepted. How many @nytimes editors looked at a cartoon that would not have looked out of place on a white supremacist website and thought it met the paper's editorial standards? What does this say about your processes or your decision makers? How are you fixing it?" the AJC wrote on its Twitter page.

Trump is actively improving US relations with Israel. The US president has already recognized Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state and the Golan Heights as a part of Israel. Both decisions are not in line with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and were widely criticized by the international community.
