Scotland May Hold Independence Referendum by 2021 If Brexit Not Revoked - Leader

Scotland may hold an independence referendum until the end of the current parliament's term in 2021 if Brexit is not revoked, First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon said Wednesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th April, 2019) Scotland may hold an independence referendum until the end of the current parliament's term in 2021 if Brexit is not revoked, First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon said Wednesday.

"To rush into an immediate decision before a Brexit path has been determined would not allow for an informed choice to be made. However if we are to safeguard Scotland's interests we can not wait indefinitely. That is why I consider that a choice between Brexit and a future for Scotland as an independent European nation should be offered in the lifetime of this parliament," Sturgeon told the Scottish Parliament.

The first minister added that Scotland's government would shortly try to put the necessary legislation in place.

"We will shortly introduce legislation to set the rules for any referendum that is now, or in the future, within the competence of the Scottish parliament. We will aim for this legislation to be on the Statute Book by the end of this year," Sturgeon said.

At 2016 Brexit referendum, Scotland voted to remain part of the European Union. Across the United Kingdom, however, the Leave vote won. The idea of an independence referendum has been floated, but UK Prime Minister Theresa May said in 2017 that the timing was not right for it.
