Libya's Eastern Administration Hoped Sarraj Would Back Army - Foreign Minister

The foreign minister of the Tobruk-based government controlling eastern Libya told Sputnik on Monday that they expected Fayez Sarraj, the prime minister of the UN-supported Government of National Accord (GNA), to back the offensive led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar's army

AL BAYDA (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th April, 2019) The foreign minister of the Tobruk-based government controlling eastern Libya told Sputnik on Monday that they expected Fayez Sarraj, the prime minister of the UN-supported Government of National Accord (GNA), to back the offensive led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar's army.

"We hoped that the Government of National Accord and its head would join the people of Libya and support its choice and the army ... We hoped Sarraj would address Libyans and urge them to stand by the army and would back it himself," Abd Hadi Houweish said.

The administration in the east is supported by Haftar's Libyan National Army, which has long been fighting against Islamist militants. Haftar ordered his troops last Thursday to advance on the capital of Tripoli to wrestle it from "terrorists," prompting forces loyal to Sarraj to announce a counteroffensive on Sunday.

Libya has been gripped by political turmoil since its leader, Muammar Gaddafi, was deposed and killed in 2011. The country is split between two rival administrations, with an elected parliament governing the east and the UN and EU-backed government of Prime Minister Sarraj ruling the west from Tripoli.
