MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th April, 2019) EU foreign ministers called on the Afghan government and the Taliban on Monday to seek a peaceful way out of the protracted conflict.
"The EU encourages the Government of Afghanistan and the Taliban to intensify their efforts towards a peaceful and negotiated settlement of the conflict. The EU supports all efforts to catalyse such a process, which has created a political opportunity that should be seized," their statement read.
The EU ministers recommended the warring parties to hold direct negotiations "as soon as possible" and reaffirmed their readiness to make the peace process inclusive and act as its guarantor if asked to, and assist Afghans with reforms and reintegration of Taliban fighters.
"The EU also reiterates the importance of holding inclusive, credible and transparent presidential, provincial council and district council elections in 2019, which are an essential element for a strengthened democracy and stability in Afghanistan," the statement said.
Afghanistan has long been gripped by violence and political instability but the two main rivals, the Afghan government and Taliban Islamist insurgents, have been making steps toward peace by holding indirect talks. The reintegration of 60,000 Taliban fighters is a major concern.
