WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th April, 2019) Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Friday that he intends to visit Latin America soon to discuss the Venezuelan crisis with US allies in the region.
When asked if he will go to Venezuela, Pompeo said, "I am going to head to the region before too long. I am going to go visit some of the great partners and allies that the State Department has built out who each is determined as we are to restore democracy there."
In January, US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido illegally declared himself interim president of Venezuela after disputing Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's reelection victory in May. Washington immediately endorsed Guaido and called on Maduro to step down. A number of Latin American countries, including Colombia and Brazil, followed suit and recognized Guaido.
Maduro has accused the United States of trying to orchestrate a coup in order to install Guaido as a US puppet. Russia, China, Cuba, Bolivia, Turkey and a number of other countries have voiced their support for Maduro as the only legitimate president of Venezuela.
