US Navy Launching $21Bln Effort to Modernize Four Nuclear Shipyards - Sea Systems Command

The US Navy is launching a $21 billion initiative to recapitalize four public shipyards to service an expanding fleet of nuclear powered aircraft carriers and submarines, Naval Sea Systems Command said in a press release on Thursday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th April, 2019) The US Navy is launching a $21 billion initiative to recapitalize four public shipyards to service an expanding fleet of nuclear powered aircraft carriers and submarines, Naval Sea Systems Command said in a press release on Thursday.

"Without major upgrades and reconfigurations, the shipyards would not be able to meet the fleet's future aircraft carrier and submarine depot maintenance and inactivation requirements looking out through 2040," the release stated.

The plan will modernize the infrastructure to include critical dry dock repairs, restore needed shipyard facilities and replace aging and deteriorating capital equipment, the release added.

The Navy's four shipyards - located in the US states of Virginia, Maine, Washington and Hawaii - were designed and built in the 19th and 20th centuries to service conventionally powered ships, according to the release.
