ODIHR Report on Ukrainian Election Shows Necessity to Reform Observation System - Moscow

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th April, 2019) The interim report of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) on Ukraine's presidential election demonstrates the necessity to reform the entire system of election observation, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said Thursday.

"[The report] is another example of the necessity to reform the mechanisms of election observation, transfer them to a solid contractual basis and exclude the possibility of dividing states into some groups and subgroups. All our proposals are on the negotiating table in Vienna. We are convinced that implementation of these proposals will ultimately increase credibility of the monitoring mechanisms," Grushko told reporters, stressing that the conclusions of the report were guided by political considerations.

Ukraine held its presidential election on March 31. Volodymyr Zelensky won 30.24 percent, while incumbent Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko secured 15.95 percent. Since no candidate gained the 50 percent majority, the second round will take place on April 21.
