MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 03rd April, 2019) Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom plans to start the construction of the second unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant (NPP) in Turkey in the first half of 2019, after obtaining a necessary license, the company's CEO, Alexey Likhachev, told reporters on Wednesday.

"As soon as we obtain a license. I think, in the first half of the year," Likhachev said, answering a relevant question.

An intergovernmental cooperation agreement to build the Akkuyu NPP was signed by Moscow and Ankara in April 2018. The plant's four 1,200-megawatt power units are each expected to produce about 35 billion kilowatt-hours per year. The project's total cost is about $20 billion. Turkey expects the plant's first unit to begin operating in 2023.

In December, the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority issued a limited work permit for the construction of the second unit of the Akkuyu plant with Russian participation. The limited work permit is a preliminary document authorizing the construction of facilities of the unit except reactor facility.
