US Treasury Secretary Describes 8th Round of Trade Talks With Beijing as Constructive

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 29th March, 2019) US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who completes on Friday his two-day visit to Beijing for the eighth round of trade consultations with China, described the negotiations as constructive, adding that he was looking forward to the next round of talks in Washington.

The US side to the consultations in Beijing was also represented by US Special Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, while Chinese Vice Premier Liu He attended the talks on the part of Beijing.

"@USTradeRep [Lighthizer] and I concluded constructive trade talks in Beijing. I look forward to welcoming China's Vice Premier Liu He to continue these important discussions in Washington next week," Mnuchin tweeted.

During these bilateral consultations, China and the United States are trying to work out a mutually acceptable trade agreement that would put an end to an almost year-long tariff war between the world's largest economies. Both Beijing and Washington have cited progress in the talks, and US President Donald Trump even postponed the tariff spike that was scheduled to go into effect on March 1.

At the same time, Trump said last week that he was not yet considering lifting the tariffs on Chinese goods, which he had imposed to adjust the Chinese-US trade imbalance and protect US producers.
