Palestinian Leader Abbas Slams Escalation at Al-Aqsa Mosque - Statement

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the "Israeli violence" that has recently took place near Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, a statement from the presidency said on Tuesday

CAIRO (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th March, 2019) Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the "Israeli violence" that has recently took place near Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, a statement from the presidency said on Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday police officers sealed the mosque, considered the third holiest site in islam, and the neighboring compounds in the Old City of Jerusalem. Photos and videos from the site released on social media showed clashes between police and worshipers.

"The Palestinian presidency condemns dangerous Israeli escalation at Al-Aqsa Mosque and warns [Israel] of consequences," the statement said.

The Palestinian leader "is contacting all parties, particularly Jordan, to make the Israeli government stop this dangerous escalation in Al Aqsa mosque," the statement added.

Jordan is currently the custodian of Muslim sacred sites in Jerusalem.

According to Israeli media, clashes near the holy site started after a firebomb was thrown at police. The fighting led to the injuries among Palestinian worshipers and Israeli police, while several people were reportedly detained on the site.

Al Aqsa mosque, which is situated close to both Christian and Jewish holy sites, has been the flashpoint in the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The mosque is a part of Temple Mount area which has repeatedly seen confrontations in recent years between Palestinian worshipers and Israeli servicemen, resulting in injuries and casualties.
