MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th March, 2019) The first hearing in the case of RIA Novosti Ukraine portal head Kirill Vyshinsky will be held on March 26 in Podolsky district court in Kiev, Vyshinsky's lawyer Andriy Domansky told Sputnik on Thursday.

"The hearing of Kirill's case is slated for 02:20 p.m. [12:00GMT] on March 26 in Podolsky district court in Kiev," Domansky said.

Vyshynsky has been in custody in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson since last May on charges of high treason and supporting the independence bid of two eastern breakaway regions, which he has denied. The charges against him carry a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

On Wednesday, the Kherson Appeals Court in Ukraine rejected an appeal by the defense regarding the illegality of the extension of Vyshynsky's arrest until April 8.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has described Vyshinsky's case as a politically motivated attack on a journalist doing his job. Harlem Desir, the representative on freedom of the media at the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, has also expressed his concern over Ukraine's actions toward Vyshinsky and called for the journalist's release.
