Trump Administration Has No Plans for Military Intervention in Venezuela - Abrams

The Trump administration is not pursuing the path of military intervention in Venezuela, US Special Envoy for Venezuela Eliot Abrams said in a congressional testimony on Thursday

NEW YORK (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th March, 2019) The Trump administration is not pursuing the path of military intervention in Venezuela, US Special Envoy for Venezuela Eliot Abrams said in a congressional testimony on Thursday.

"We are not pursuing that path," Abrams said when asked whether he was aware of any plans in the Trump administration for pursuing military action in Venezuela.

Abrams explained plans for protection of US embassies overseas are always on the table; however, the United States does not plan on intervening militarily in Venezuela in the context of the recent developments in that country.

Tensions in Venezuela escalated in January when US-backed opposition leader Guaido declared himself to be the country's interim president. The United States immediately recognized Guaido, seized billions of Dollars' worth of the Venezuela's assets and threatened to use military action against incumbent President Nicolas Maduro's government.

Maduro has called Guaido a puppet of the United States and accused the United States of attempting to orchestrate a coup to overthrow Venezuela's legitimate government.

Russia, China, Turkey, mexico, Bolivia and a number of other countries have reaffirmed their support for Maduro as Venezuela's only legitimate president. The United Nations also recognizes the Maduro government as Venezuela's legitimate authority.
