Zakharova Says Surprised by 'Cynical' Silence on Situation in Syria's Al-Hol Refugee Camp

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday that she was surprised by the "cynical" silence around the situation in the Al-Hol refugee camp in Syria

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th March, 2019) Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday that she was surprised by the "cynical" silence around the situation in the Al-Hol refugee camp in Syria.

According to Zakharova, the Al-Hol refugee camp in Syria's Al Hasakah province accepts people who have fled from Deir ez-Zor, where the international coalition is carrying out attacks not only on militant positions but also civilian targets. The camp's population has therefore increased from 10,000 to 47,000 people, who live there in dire conditions, with acute shortages of food, fresh water and medicines. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, over 80 people fleeing from Deir ez-Zor have died on their way to the camp since December.

"Given the international community's close attention to the situation in the Rukban camp, indifference and total silence around the crisis situation in the Al-Hol is surprising. Neglecting the plight in this camp, as well as in other locations of internally displaced people in Syria, appears, to put it mildly, cynical," Zakharova said.

Zakharova also noted that Russia was committed to doing everything possible to find a solution to the Rukban camp problem.

The Rukban camp is located in the southern part of Syria, not far from the Jordanian border. The area became a refugee camp for Syrian residents back in 2014, but the territory was later isolated after US forces set up a military base in At-Tanf in 2016 and restricted movement around its outpost. In January, the World Health Organization described the people residing in the camp as "trapped," adding that they lived "in deplorable conditions."
