MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 07th March, 2019) The West is using various methods to hamper Syria's reinstatement in the League of Arab States, the Russian Foreign Ministry's spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Thursday."In my opinion, there is only one [obstacle] - an attempt by our Western partners, who represent the respective coalition, in every possible way to prevent what will become for them another manifestation of failed policy in the region ... No one sees any other obstacles. There is a deliberate desire to prevent, hinder this process," Zakharova said, when asked what stumbling blocks lay on Syria's path to return to the regional organization.
The Arab League cannot function properly without Syria as its member as the latter is one of the biggest Arab countries, the spokeswoman noted.
The Arab League suspended Syria's membership in 2011 over eruption of the conflict in the country. Lebanon, Algeria, Iraq, Tunisia, Sudan, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Bahrain have already voiced their support for returning Syria to the organization. Palestine also wants Syria to be allowed to return to the regional organization.
According to Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Syria may rejoin the organization only if all other members support this initiative.
