DAMASCUS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 27th February, 2019) The Al-Hol refugee camp in northeastern Syria, which hosts more than 50,000 people, is in urgent need of financial support to keep up with the increasing demand for humanitarian aid, UN Public Information Officer in Syria Fadwa Baroud told Sputnik on Wednesday.

The Al-Hol camp is accepting internally displaced persons fleeing the area around the Syrian city of Hajin where the US-backed Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been waging a campaign against the remaining pockets of the Islamic State terror group (banned in Russia) for recent several months.

"Despite the fact, that the United Nations and its partners managed to achieve humanitarian success and stabilize the situation during the first influx of people from Hajin, a powerful and unexpected new influx of people became a challenge in terms of providing the camp with food, water, canalization and medicines ... We urgently need finances to cope with the changing situation in the camp and increasing needs for humanitarian aid," Barud said.

She added that some 2,500 internally displaced persons arrived at the camp on Wednesday, raising the total number of people living there to 53,000.

Syria has been mired in a civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting against numerous opposition groups as well as terrorist organizations. The war has resulted in a significant humanitarian crisis in the country with various international organizations as well as Russia trying to provide civilians with aid.
