French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday that he would visit Iraq in a few months
PARIS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th February, 2019) French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday that he would visit Iraq in a few months."We need to support specific projects to build long-term peace [in Iraq]. This is my wish and this is the message I will deliver in a few months in Iraq as I will respond to your invitation," Macron said at a joint press conference with Iraqi President Barham Salih.
The situation in Iraq has been highly unstable for years due to the activities of the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia), who have been staging regular attacks on Iraqi troops and civilians.
In December 2017, then-Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi announced a victory over the IS jihadists after over three years of fighting but said that local security and law enforcement services would continue eliminating IS sleeper cells.
