WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th February, 2019) The United States and 16 of its allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will take part in a computer-based global command-and control exercise on March 13-26, US European Command (EUCOM) said in a statement on Monday.

"Approximately 4,500 personnel will participate in the US-led, computer-based, command post exercise," EUCOM said.

The drills, dubbed Exercise Austere Challenge 2019, will be held at multiple locations across the EUCOM area of operations, the statement said.

Exercise Austere Challenge is "part of a series of training events that have been planned and executed since the 1990s intended to exercise combatant command coordination, command and control, and integration of capabilities and functions of the US European Command headquarters, its component commands, interagencies across the US Government, and with NATO allies," EUCOM added.

The drills are linked to a number of other international exercises the US military plans to conduct in 2019, including US Strategic Command's Exercise Global Lightning 2019, US Cyber Command's Exercise Cyber Lightning 2019, US Northern Command's Exercise Vigilant Shield 2019, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Exercise Positive Response 2019 and the UK's Exercise Joint Venture 2019, EUCOM added.
