PARIS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 14th February, 2019) About 8,400 people have been detained in France since November 17, when the yellow vest demonstrations in the country began, while 7,500 people have been taken into police custody, local media reported Thursday, citing French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner.

According to France's LCI tv channel, about 1,300 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters have been injured since the movement launched.

Large-scale protests erupted in France on November 17 in the wake of the government's decision to raise fuel prices and increase fuel tax. Even though the French authorities later scrapped their plans, the yellow vest protesters, dissatisfied with the government's social policies, continued to rally across the country. The demonstrations are often accompanied by violent clashes between protesters and police. The yellow vests rallied for the thirteenth straight weekend in Paris and other major French cities on Saturday.

On Wednesday, France's Elabe research center published a poll that showed that the majority of French citizens 56 percent advocated the end to weekly rallies.
