Germany Military To Participate In 4 Foreign Missions For Another Year - Government

The German government has decided to give a one-year extension for its military's participation in four missions abroad, government deputy spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer said on Wednesday

BERLIN (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th February, 2019) The German government has decided to give a one-year extension for its military's participation in four missions abroad, government deputy spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer said on Wednesday.

"The government decided to extend the participation of the Bundeswehr [German military] in four military missions abroad," Demmer said at a briefing in Berlin.

She pointed out that the one-year prolongation applies to the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), NATO Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan and NATO-led Operation Sea Guardian in the Mediterranean Sea.

Currently, UNMISS and UNAIMD have 50 soldiers each. As many as 1,200 German soldiers and military instructors are participating in Resolute Support, and 1,300 more may be added, while the German contingent of Operation Sea Guardian comprises 180 personnel, who could be joined by 650 more.

When asked about the United States' possible pullout from the Resolute Support mission, Demmer said that if any specific decisions on the withdrawal are announced, they will be discussed with the allies. Germany's main task in Afghanistan is to ensure a successful peace process, she added.

The government's decision to extend the Bundeswehr's participation in foreign military missions has yet to be approved by the German parliament.
