German Police Detain 2 Alleged Syrian Ex-Intel Officers - Prosecution

German criminal police have detained two Syrian nationals suspected of a role in alleged tortures in Syria as part of the national intelligence service, the prosecution said Wednesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th February, 2019) German criminal police have detained two Syrian nationals suspected of a role in alleged tortures in Syria as part of the national intelligence service, the prosecution said Wednesday.

The men, 56-year-old Anwar R. and 42-year-old Eyad A., were arrested on Tuesday in Berlin and the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Federal prosecutor's office said in a press release.

"Anwar R. is strongly suspected of crimes against humanity and other offenses ... Eyad A. is strongly suspected of aiding and abetting in a crime against humanity and other offenses," it read.

The two left Syria in 2012. They stand accused of participating in tortures of anti-government protesters in 2011 and 2012, according to the release.

Anwar R. is believed to have been a highly-ranked intelligence officer who ran an investigative department and a prison in Damascus where, the prosecution claims, torture was routinely used.

Eyad A., the release adds, was an intelligence worker manning a checkpoint near Damascus where a hundred people were detained every day and sent to the prison managed by Anwar R. He stands accused of helping kill two people and torture 2,000 others.

The German prosecution said a third Syrian was detained in France the same day. He is suspected of working for Anwar R. at the intelligence department. The arrests were coordinated between Germany and France.
