Poland Wants to Contribute to Rapprochement of EU, US Over Iran Issue - Foreign Minister

Poland wants to contribute to the rapprochement of Washington and Europe, including on the nuclear agreement with Iran, Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said Wednesday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 13th February, 2019) Poland wants to contribute to the rapprochement of Washington and Europe, including on the nuclear agreement with Iran, Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz said Wednesday.

Warsaw hosts on February 13-14 the ministerial meeting on the middle East, organized jointly by the United States and Poland.

"We would like to contribute to Europe and the United States meeting each other halfway and beginning to solve problems together ... Now, Poland would like to make sure that both sides, the US and the EU, came closer on this [Iran nuclear] issue," Czaputowicz told Die Welt newspaper in an interview.

At the same time, he noted that Iran was not the subject of the conference.

"The conference is aimed at such issues as arms proliferation, terrorism, and hybrid threats ... We are generally talking about stabilizing the region, including the refugee issue," Czaputowicz said.

On January 11, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the meeting would also address Iran in the context of making sure it did not constitute a "destabilizing influence" in the region. Iran was not among the countries invited to the meeting.

On January 22, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that it would refrain from participating in the Warsaw conference, calling the meeting a US "political project" aimed at promoting Washington's geopolitical interests within the international community.

The United States reinstated sanctions against Iran following the country's withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) - the Iran nuclear agreement - in May. The first round of sanctions came into force in August, followed by a second round on November 5. The sanctions target not only Iran's economy but also those individuals and entities who continue to do business with Iran.

Following a September ministerial meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, China, Russia and Iran announced that the European Union would establish a financial mechanism to enable trade with Iran after a decision by the United States to reimpose sanctions on Tehran.
