Russia Believes Working With Taliban Against IS Terrorists Possible - Foreign Ministry

Moscow believes that working with the Taliban movement against the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia) in Afghanistan is possible, Zamir Kabulov, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Second Asian Department, said Tuesday at a press conference

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 12th February, 2019) Moscow believes that working with the Taliban movement against the Islamic State terrorist group (IS, banned in Russia) in Afghanistan is possible, Zamir Kabulov, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Second Asian Department, said Tuesday at a press conference.

"Why not [work together]," Kabulov said, when asked if Russia ruled out joint work with the Taliban against the IS.

Regarding the review of the group's "banned" status, Kabulov said that the issue was not on the agenda yet.

"We have to go step by step. Depending on the actual steps of the Taliban in terms of the national reconciliation. This issue will be considered at some point. We should not forget that the [Russian] president's decree on recognizing Taliban as a terrorist organization did not appear out of nowhere. It appeared after the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1257 ... If the UNSC adopts another resolution, the Russian leadership will also adopt a decree, as I understand," Kabulov, who is also Russian president's special envoy on Afghanistan, said.
