Kosovo Not Cooperating With UNMIK Will Violate Security Council Resolution 1244 - Nebenzia

UNITED NATIONS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 08th February, 2019) The intention of the government of Kosovo to stop cooperating with the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) will constitute a violation of Security Council resolution 1244, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia told council at a meeting on the mission.

"The statement by the Prime Minister of Kosovo Ramush Haradinaj that his government will stop cooperating with the mission is a flagrant violation of resolution 1244," Nebenzia said on Thursday. "We confirm our unchanged position that Pristina's participation in multistate structures is possible only through UNMIK."

The ambassador also called for the maintenance of close monitoring of the situation in Kosovo by the international community and the Security Council.

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008 and is recognized by over 100 UN member states. Belgrade, however, continues to consider it Serbian territory. Two members of the UN Security Council Russia and China and a number of other countries do not recognize Kosovo's independence either.
