US Relief Aid Sets Stage for Military Clash in Venezuela - Food Distribution Chief

By sending relief aid to Venezuela the United States seeks to start a confrontation and ultimately gain access to its enormous mineral resources, the national coordinator of Venezuela's Local Provision and Production Committees told Sputnik

CARACAS (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 06th February, 2019) By sending relief aid to Venezuela the United States seeks to start a confrontation and ultimately gain access to its enormous mineral resources, the national coordinator of Venezuela's Local Provision and Production Committees told Sputnik.

"When they raise the flag of humanitarian aid it is used as a sort of Trojan horse to seek confrontation... The US' single main objective is to own Venezuela's immense resources," Freddy Bernal said.

The Venezuelan government had stepped up security along its frontiers and on the roads, he said, after reports that the military had blocked a bridge in the western province of Tachira near Colombia to stop a US aid shipment.

Bernal, who has been appointed protector of the state, said he had inspected all border posts to make sure the situation remained under control.

"We were told that the much-touted humanitarian aid will arrive at midnight... and that any opposition on the part of the Venezuelan government would be regarded as an act of war... It is a show... that will be staged on the Colombian border, but I am convinced there will be no major disturbances on our side," he added.

The official slammed the United States for trying to destroy Venezuela like it did in Libya, Iraq and Syria, but said Caracas would not fall for its provocations.

The United States said over the weekend it was mobilizing humanitarian aid for Venezuela, which has been suffering from shortages of basic household items, at the request of Juan Guaido, who declared himself Venezuela's interim president. Washington swiftly recognized him.

Russia, China, Mexico and several other countries have backed President Nicolas Maduro. EU nations failed this week to agree a unified approach to the crisis after Italy vetoed a joint statement recognizing Guaido, according to a Sputnik source in Brussels.
