Medvedchuk Says His Stance on Donbas Settlement in Line With Ukrainian Law

Viktor Medvedchuk, Kiev's representative to the humanitarian subgroup of the Trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine, said on Tuesday that his stance on the settlement of the armed conflict in Donbas did not violate Ukrainian law and called the legal case brought against him by Kiev "political repression."

KIEV (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 05th February, 2019) Viktor Medvedchuk, Kiev's representative to the humanitarian subgroup of the Trilateral Contact Group on Ukraine, said on Tuesday that his stance on the settlement of the armed conflict in Donbas did not violate Ukrainian law and called the legal case brought against him by Kiev "political repression."

"Political repression has been ongoing all these years, including against me, attempts to open legal cases and accuse [people] of something that is not punishable by law, and there are no grounds for the accusations. I can tell you resolutely and confidently that my principal stance, including on the peaceful settlement [in Donbas], is fully in line with the [Ukrainian] law," Medvedchuk told the 112 Ukraina television channel.

Earlier in the day, the office of the Ukrainian General Prosecutor announced that a legal case had been launched against Medvedchuk, who is also the leader of the Ukrainian Choice - Right of People public movement, on suspicion of treason and infringement on the country's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The case is related to Medvedchuk's statement that he made on January 29, suggesting that Kiev should give Donbas the status of an autonomous region in Ukraine that would have its own state institutions, including the parliament and the government.
