Yemeni Government, Houthis to Discuss Prisoner Exchange on Tuesday - UN Special Envoy

Representatives of the Yemeni government and the rebel Houthi movement will discuss prisoner exchange on Tuesday in Amman, the office of UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths said Monday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 04th February, 2019) Representatives of the Yemeni government and the rebel Houthi movement will discuss prisoner exchange on Tuesday in Amman, the office of UN Special Envoy for Yemen Martin Griffiths said Monday.

"The Supervisory Committee on the implementation of the prisoner exchange agreement is scheduled to reconvene in Amman tomorrow, 5 February. The Committee includes representatives of the Government of Yemen and Ansar Allah, and is co-chaired by the Office of the Special Envoy and the International Committee of the Red Cross," the envoy's office said in a press release.

The committee will focus on "the steps taken by the two parties to finalize the lists of prisoners."

Griffiths and President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer are expected to attend the first day of the committee's talks, the press release said.

The warring parties reached an agreement on prisoner exchange in December in Sweden, during peace settlement consultations.

The Yemeni government and the Houthis have been locked in deadly conflict for several years. The Saudi-led coalition, which backs the government, has been carrying out airstrikes and imposing naval and air blockades in Yemen.

According to United Nations Human Rights Office, at least 6,660 civilians were killed and 10,563 were injured in Yemen between March 2015 and August 2018.
