Washington Ignored Moscow's View on INF Treaty, Never Planned to Negotiate - Kosachev

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st February, 2019) The United States has decided to suspend the implementation of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) long ago, and has ignored Russia's position on controversial issues opting for the language of ultimatums, Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee at Russia's upper house of parliament said Friday.

US State Secretary Mike Pompeo announced earlier in the day that the United States will suspend its obligations under the INF Treaty on February 2 and will begin the six-months withdrawal process unless Russia comes back into compliance with the bilateral agreement.

"The fact that the United States has initially chosen the language of ultimatums, knowing full well that Russia would not tolerate such a tone in bilateral discussions, especially in the area of security, confirms that no one [on the American side] ever had intentions to negotiate," Kosachev told reporters in Moscow.

"Pompeo voiced only what had been decided long ago, before the issuance of the ultimatum to Russia, and no actions by Moscow could ever change it," the lawmaker stressed.
