MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 01st February, 2019) Russia has commended Lebanon for successfully forming a cabinet, a task that the middle Eastern country had been struggling to achieve for eight months, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.Lebanon had been in a political crisis due to the absence of government since May. On Thursday, Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri finally announced the appointment of the country's new cabinet of ministers.
"Moscow welcomes the successful completion of the eight-month domestic political marathon to coordinate the staff of the highest executive body of Lebanon. An important step has been taken toward further strengthening the unity of this country. Uneasy solutions have been found to maintain a mutually acceptable balance of interests in a pluralistic Lebanese society and at the same time take into account the results of the general election held last May," the ministry said in a statement.
Moscow hopes to continue maintaining an active political dialogue with Beirut for the sake of peace and stability in the Middle East.
Long delays in the formation of cabinets are common for Lebanon due their system of balance of power, which aims to take into account numerous religious and political communities. Moreover, the Hezbollah movement, which is backed by Iran, is also an Apple of discord in Lebanese politics. It has reportedly managed to secure a few seats in the new cabinet, while also having several sympathizing members of the government.
