Russian, Turkish Deputy Foreign Ministers Discuss Steps to Stabilize Situation in Syria

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin has discussed with Turkish counterpart Sedat Onal measures to stabilize the situation in Syria and political settlement in the country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday

MOSCOW (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 25th January, 2019) Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin has discussed with Turkish counterpart Sedat Onal measures to stabilize the situation in Syria and political settlement in the country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

The meeting between the deputy ministers comes two days after the talks between the Russian and Turkish presidents. On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hold a meeting, during which they touched, among other issues, upon the situation in Syria in the context of the US troops withdrawal from the region and agreed to continue to cooperate on Syria's Idlib and coordinate efforts for Syrian refugees return.

"The parties have constructively discussed the situation 'on the ground' with a focus on the need to further stabilize the situation in Syria, eradicate the terrorist threat in the country and create conditions for Syrian refugees' safe and dignified return home," the statement read.

According to the statement, the parties have paid close attention to the Russian and Syrian efforts to promote the political process in the country, including the launch of the constitutional committee's work in Syria.

The creation of the committee, which is expected to draft Syria's new constitution, was first agreed upon during the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in the Russian resort city of Sochi last January. The committee is expected to consist of three groups representing the Syrian government, opposition, and civil society, women, experts and leaders of various tribes living in Syria.
