US to Provide Venezuela Over $20Mln in Humanitarian Aid Amid Political Crisis - Pompeo

The United States is ready to provide Venezuela with more than $20 million in humanitarian assistance amid the worsening political crisis in that country, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during remarks at the Organization of American States in Washington, DC on Thursday

WASHINGTON (Pakistan Point News / Sputnik - 24th January, 2019) The United States is ready to provide Venezuela with more than $20 million in humanitarian assistance amid the worsening political crisis in that country, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during remarks at the Organization of American States in Washington, DC on Thursday.

"Today, I'm announcing that the United States is ready to provide more than $20 million in humanitarian assistance for the people of Venezuela," Pompeo said. "These funds are to help them cope with the severe food and medicine shortages and other dire impacts of their country's political and economic crisis."

Pompeo called on Venezuela's security forces to ensure the protection of the country's interim President Juan Guaido.

On Wednesday, Guaido declared himself to be Venezuela's interim president. The United States urged Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro to step down and let Guaido assume the presidency. Maduro has claimed Washington attempted to stage a coup d'etat in Venezuela and announced his decision to cut off diplomatic relations with the United States.

So far, the United States, Canada, Albania, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Georgia, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Paraguay and Peru have recognized Guaido as Venezuela's interim president.

Earlier in January, Maduro took an oath of office to begin his second presidential term, which will last until 2025. The Organization of American States, members of the Lima Group - except Mexico - and the United States have refused to recognize Maduro's new term.
